Dans la petite ville d’Eastvale, Yorkshire, tout n’est pas aussi idyllique que le pensait l’inspecteur en chef Banks lorsqu’il quitta Londres, ses malfrats, ses crimes, sa noirceur.

L’inspecteur a probablement oublié que la violence n’est pas l’apanage des grandes cités, la province aussi est atteinte. Non, la vie de province n’est pas aussi simple qu’il se le figurait.

A Eastvale, il est confronté à trois problèmes d’un seul coup : un voyeur sévit la nuit et observe les jolies jeunes femmes pendant qu’elles se déshabillent ; deux jeunes malfrats cambriolent et agressent d’abord de vieilles gens à leur domicile pour finalement se diriger vers les demeures plus importantes.

Enfin, le plus grave des cas, une vieille dame est retrouvée morte au bas des escaliers. Bien que l’assassin ait pris soin de camoufler le crime en accident, il ne fait aucun doute qu’il s’agisse d’un crime.

Afin d’élucider le problème du voyeur (ou scopopathe, terme médical !), le directeur engage une psychologue afin de travailler en étroite collaboration avec l’inspecteur. "Etroite" risque de ne plus rester au figuré, car Banks se sent très attiré par sa collègue, ce qui risque de mettre son mariage en danger.

Même si les trois cas à résoudre ne sont pas particulièrement originaux, l’aspect psychologique des situations est amené de manière simple et intéressante, d’autant plus que l’on se demande s’il y a un lien entre ces trois cas et si oui, lequel ? Lorsque non seulement l’épouse de l’inspecteur est elle-même agressée, ainsi que la psychologue avec qui il collabore, sont elles-mêmes agressées l’histoire prend un tournant plus dramatique.

Le lecteur partage la procédure policière ainsi que la vie des habitants calme en apparence (mais en apparence seulement) d’une jolie cité dans une contrée connue pour ses charmes touristiques.

C’est le premier polar que je découvre de Peter Robinson, mettant en scène l’inspecteur en chef Banks et la cité d’Eastvale, mais ce ne sera pas le dernier car l’atmosphère apparemment sans surprises, mais complexe en réalité, m’a beaucoup plu. L’histoire est crédible, ce qui n’est pas le moindre de l’intérêt du polar.

Contrairement à d’autres héros de polars, Banks est relativement jeune, c’est un homme sensible, curieux de tout et ayant pour le moment une passion pour l’opéra (pour le moment selon son épouse, car ses goûts sont changeants).

On retrouve ici l’ambiance des romans d’autres auteurs britanniques tels que Colin Dexter, Reginald Hill, Caroline Graham, P.D. James ou Ruth Rendell.

    Je suis très intéressée par les livres de Peter Robinson et, énorme problème, impossible de trouver la chronologie des enquêtes d’Alan Banks ! Ce livre-ci est, apparemment, le 1er de la collection : connaissez-vous le titre traduit en français ?
