Tod est scénariste, peintre, et très oisif. Dans le Los Angeles des années 30, il vivote, traîne beaucoup, rêve un peu. En particulier de Faye, une jeune femme superficielle qui comme beaucoup veut devenir actrice, mais qui n’a que son corps en argument. Celle-ci repousse toujours gentiment ses avances. Sans justification. La frustration gagne Tod, et progresse encore quand à la mort du père de Faye - un comédien VRP, celle-ci s’installe avec Homer, un balourd timide et sans ambition.
