C’est sûr, voici un roman d’un âge déjà respectable puisque son auteur naquit en 1811. Et pourtant, passées les première pages (ne faut-il pas toujours un minimum de temps pour installer les personnages dans leur décor ?), il nous apparaît d’emblée extrêmement moderne. Il est rare en effet que, contrairement à son illustre contemporain, Charles DICKENS, THACKERAY use et abuse des "tics" d’écriture propres aux écrivains de l’époque.
