Richard a quitté avec bonheur le soleil de la Californie pour les neiges du Vermont où il est accepté à l’université. A Hampden il va rencontrer l’esthétisme de la côte Est au milieux d’étudiants sensibles et érudits. Petit à petit il va pourtant se rendre compte que certaines pratiques de ses condisciples ne sont pas innocentes.

Le voilà enfin, le tant attendu deuxième roman de Donna Tartt. Dix ans que les lecteurs enthousiastes du "Maître des illusions" piaffaient d’impatience... Fini le monde universitaire, le milieu étudiant du Montana. Dans ce roman, l’écrivain situe l’intrigue dans le Mississipi des années 70, dans une petite ville dénommée Alexandria.
