L’auteur trace l’histoire de quatre personnage hors du commun chacun à leur manière, ou, plutôt, extraordinaire - professeur exemplaire brisé par le Nazisme, richissime bourgeois parcourant le monde avec son fidèle valet à la recherche d’un bonheur introuvable, peintre perdu dans la grisaille métallique de Manchester - toujours en mettant en abîme deux ou trois génération d’immigrés, le narrateur, le sujet, et, parfois, un compteur.
