Stanley Yelnats est un jeune garçon qui se trouve devant le juge pour enfant. Il est condamné pour avoir soit disant volé une paire de basket appartenant à un joueur mondialement connu. Ces baskets étaient mises aux enchères pour une oeuvre de charité. Il est donc condamné, soit à quelques jours en prison, ou quelques mois au Camp du Lac Vert. Comme Stanley n’est jamais parti en vacances, il pense découvrir la joie des colonies de vacances et choisi le Camp du Lac Vert.
