En juin 1996, à Wilmington (Delaware), une jeune femme disparait inexplicablement. Proche collaboratrice du gouverneur de l’État, fiancée à un homme qui l’aimait, très entourée par sa famille et ses amis, Anne-Marie n’avait apparemment aucune raison de fuir. Enquêteurs et hommes de loi vont fouiller sa vie en tous sens avant d’établir les raisons et les circonstances de sa mort.
