« Minorque, 1er avril 1800. Stephen Maturin, médecin irlandais, donne un coup de coude à un jeune lieutenant de la Royal Navy, Jack Aubrey, qui, enthousiasmé par la musique, lui gâche le plaisir d’entendre le Quatuor dans le salon du gouverneur de Port Mahon. Après un dîner, ces deux hommes terriblement différents se découvrent des affinités. Aubrey taquine le violon, Maturin le violoncelle, ils deviennent les meilleurs amis du monde.
