Iris Murdoch a reçu le célèbre Booker Prize en 1978 pour ce roman dans lequel elle donne la parole à Charles Arrowby, célèbre acteur et metteur en scène du théâtre londonien, qui nous livre ses mémoires. Comme le souligne la quatrième de couverture : « En un temps où pleuvent tant de Mémoires de metteurs en scène et d’acteurs, à l’authenticité plus ou moins douteuse, ce livre constitue un « faux » délectable ».

Iris Murdoch, née en Irlande en 1909 a vécu en Angleterre, enseignant la philosophie à Oxford. C’est peut-être ce qui rend son oeuvre si anglaise. Dame Iris (elle a en effet reçu ce titre de la reine) s’est éteinte en 1999, faisant du "Chevalier Vert" son dernier roman. Elle est également connue pour ses nombreux essais, articles et pièces de théâtre.
