En ces jours d’un été particulièrement chaud de 1935, en Angleterre, la jeune Briony Tallis attend avec impatience les « cousins du Nord » ; elle a une imagination fertile, voire débordante et rêve de devenir romancière ou dramaturge ; elle a d’ailleurs écrit une pièce « The Trials of Arabella », ou les tourments d’une jeune fille trop naïve, ayant fait confiance à un immonde cousin, qui la séduit et l’abandonne, la jetant dans la misère et la disgrâce jusqu’à ce qu’un être noble et bon la sauve. Très « gothique », très romantique comme peuvent l’être les écrits d’une adolescente.

Incontestablement, il s’agit d’un des meilleurs romans de la rentrée.
Ian Mc Ewan fait preuve d’une rare maîtrise tant dans la construction de l’intigue romanesque que dans la forme littéraire. L’imaginaire d’une enfant de treize ans, son interprétation du monde des adultes aboutissent à une "faute" involontaire ayant des répercussions définitives sur ses proches.
