Ce livre m’a transportée dans deux atmosphères bien étranges : celle de l’Angleterre huppée des années trente et celle de Shangai divisée entre les concessions coloniales l’invasion japonaise, l’armée du Kuomintang et les intérêts liés au commerce de la drogue.

Qu’il s’agisse du magique et surréaliste « Inconsolé » ou de l’onirique « Quand nous étions orphelins », l’œuvre de Kazuo ISHIGURO, écrivain anglophone d’origine japonaise, déçoit rarement et se prête volontiers à plusieurs lectures. C’est que l’art de son auteur s’exprime toujours en demi-teintes et en non-dits, ainsi que le prouve son plus que célèbre « Les Vestiges du Jour. »

Kazuo Ishiguro a réussi le tour de force d’écrire un des romans les plus british qu’il soit, malgré son origine japonaise. Né à Nagasaki, Kazuo Ishiguro vivra dès sa petite enfance en Grande Bretagne, et deviendra d’ailleurs citoyen de sa majesté dès 1983. Il recevra même le titre d’officier de l’Ordre de l’Empire Britannique en 1995.
