Le 15 janvier 1947, aux environs de 10 h 30 du matin, à Los Angeles, une femme qui promène sa fille aperçoit un cadavre sur la route. Elle appelle immédiatement la police mais c’est un reporter arrivé sur les lieux avant celle-ci qui constatera le premier que le corps a été scindé en deux, et fort proprement. Visiblement, le ou les assassins connaissent leur anatomie sur le bout des doigts.
