Une vague de meurtres s’abat sur le petit village anglais de Long Piddleton à la veille de Noël. Ce qui est le plus surprenant, c’est qu’il s’agit chaque fois d’étrangers (en Angleterre toute personne qui ne vient pas du village est "étrangère") descendus le matin même dans une auberge et qui se font assassiner dans des postures plus ridicules les unes que les autres : la tête dans un tonneau, pendu à la place d’une mascotte à une poutre ou encore affalé sur une table, un roman policier à la main.
