Martin et Kate, deux universitaires, décident de quitter Londres et de se retirer dans leur maison de campagne avec leur nouveau né pour une durée de trois mois. Le but de cette retraite consiste pour Martin à enfin terminer son livre sur l’impact du nominalisme sur la peinture des Pays-Bas au quinzième siècle, loin de toutes distractions susceptibles de le détourner une fois de plus de son ambitieux projet.
