Fannie Flagg
La romancière américaine naquit en 1944 (d’autres sources disent 1941, peu importe) à Birmingham, Alabama aux Etats-Unis.
Son véritable patronyme est Patricia Neal, mais elle décida qu’il n’était pas possible pour elle de l’utiliser professionnellement puisqu’une grande dame de l’écran portait déjà ce nom (Patricia Neal, oscarisée et ex-épouse du romancier Roahl Dahl - Ms. Neal fut atteinte d’une commotion cérébrale dont elle récupéra par sa grande volonté ; à la suite de cela elle fonda le Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center).
Fannie Flagg entama une carrière d’écrivain dans les années 60 et fit partie du staff d’écriture pour l’émission télévisée « Candid Camera ». Vint ensuite un « creux » dans l’écriture et Ms. Flagg opta, dans les années 70, pour une carrière d’actrice ; on put ainsi la voir dans « Five Easy Pieces », « Grease » et sur les scènes de Broadway où elle fut l’une des interprètes de « The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas ». Elle interpréta également des petits rôles dans des émissions télévisées.
Elle reprit la plume - pour ne plus la lâcher - dans les années 80 ; l’une des raisons avancées par Fannie Flagg pour son temps « mort » dans l’écriture est la dyslexie dont elle souffre ; cela la découragea compte tenu des fautes d’orthographe occasionnées par cette maladie, ce qui l’embarrassait énormément. Finalement, la romancière surmonta ses peurs et se relança dans l’aventure écrite, pour notre plus grand plaisir.
Fannie Flagg obtint la renommée internationale grâce à son deuxième roman « Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe », dont elle écrivit le scénario pour le film éponyme qui fut réalisé avec Jessica Tandy, Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary Louise Parker et Cicely Tyson. Pour ce film, l’auteure américaine (qui ne cache pas son homosexualité) supprima une partie qui mettait l’accent sur la relation homosexuelle entre Idgie et Ruth, ses héroïnes, afin que le film soit commercialement viable.
Ms. Flagg a également écrit un conte de Noel, paru en 2004 : « A Redbird Christmas ». Elle se partage actuellement entre ses maisons de Californie et d’Alabama.

Alors que son époux se rend auprès de sa mère dans la maison de retraite où elle réside, Evelyn Couch, sa femme, reste dans le salon à grignoter. Evelyn, à l’évidence, est avide de sucreries, de nourriture en général, compensant ainsi ses frustrations de ménagère ignorée de son époux.

Eveline supporte de plus en plus mal sa vie, son mari et ses kilos en trop. Alors quand tous les dimanches, elle doit accompagner son époux à la maison de retraire pour visiter son horrible belle-mère, elle s’éclipse rapidement pour aller manger des sucreries à la cafétéria. Là, elle rencontrera Ninny Threadgood, charmante et excentrique octogénaire, qui la prend en amitié et entreprend de lui raconter sa jeunesse à Whistle Stop au milieu de la famille Threadgood, dont elle épousera un des fils.
