Une jeune fille, naïve et romantique, travaille en qualité de dame de compagnie pour Mrs. Van Hopper, une Américaine des plus déplaisantes, voire même méchante. Cette femme a pour habitude de s’inscruster auprès de gens célèbres et c’est ainsi qu’elle tente de mettre le grapin sur Maxim « Max » de Winter, un veuf dont l’épouse est morte dans de mystérieuses circonstances.

Mad raconte l’aventure d’une jeune fille "brontienne" de Cornouailles face à une invasion américaine... On balance tout le long du roman entre deux genres : la SF de papa un peu à la Merle et les Hauts de Hurlevent ; c’est assez surprenant !

Ce roman de 1935 fut porté à l’écran par Hitchcock. Il raconte l’histoire de Mary Yellan, jeune orpheline qui part rejoindre sa tante Patience à l’Auberge de la Jamaïque. Malheureusement, loin de retrouver la tante enjouée de son souvenir, elle trouve une femme folle et effrayée, esclave de son mari, une brute alcoolique.
