Anita Brookner est une romancière de renom outre-manche. Ses romans sont dans la pure tradition britannique, et elle semble appartenir au même cercles qu’Angela Huth et Elizabeth Taylor, mais à mon avis, avec moins de talent. Elle situe également ses intrigues dans des endroits peu fréquentés, sans véritable histoire si ce n’est celle du temps qui passe avec des personnages principaux essentiellement féminins. Des femmes de caractère, qui tranchent bien souvent sur leurs concitoyennes, sages mères de famille ou épouses épanouies sans grandes aspirations.
