En cette période de fin d’année, Jessica Fletcher a dû quitter sa ville de Cabot Cove pour faire la promotion de son dernier livre à New-York. Entre séances de dédicaces, cocktails et autres interviews avec la presse, la romancière a peu de temps pour ses achats de Noël. C’est au cours d’une de ces escapades inespérées qu’elle croise Waldo Morse, déguisé en Père Noël sur la cinquième Avenue. Natif de Cabot Cove, il avait disparu suite à des démêlés avec la justice, abandonnant derrière lui femme et enfants.
